What a week!!

I haven't been around much this week - but I have good reason. Here's why....

On Monday, high winds took a panel of roofing from our garage, breaking it into pieces and sending it merrily across the busy main road. (And yes, it's asbestos cement, so disposing of it and getting the roof fixed isn't as straightforward as it might be.)

On Tuesday, I discovered that the outpipe from the washing machine wasn't properly fixed to the main pipework, so water had collected under the sink - and as the dishwasher outflow was also connected to the same main pipe, I couldn't use either machine till the problem was properly fixed.

On Wednesday, my neighbour came round to ask if I realised the garage roof had been blown into their garden wall, damaging it. As it turns out, I had been told about it but hadn't had a chance to do much more than make an enquiry about the insurance situation - so had to send the neighbour away with the disappointing news that our policy doesn't cover the damage to their property, they'll have to claim on their own insurance.

On Thursday, I had a nice relaxing bath to soak away the tension of the previous few days. I came downstairs afterwards to find that the bath was draining away through the kitchen ceiling.

On Friday (today), I discovered that even washing dishes by hand was causing problems, because when I emptied the washing up bowl some of the water was leaking from the same place as the washing machine and dishwasher.

Who knows what tomorrow will bring?!

But on the other hand....

On Monday, my next-door-neighbour-but-one collected up all the broken pieces of roofing, and nailed down the wooden batten that had worked loose from the garage. I'm lucky to have such a kind and helpful nearly-neighbour. (And none of the pieces hit a car or a person, which could so easily have happened, and could have had dreadful consequences.)

On Tuesday, I'd done a couple of loads of essential washing, and most of what was left could wait a while. I'm lucky that I happened to do the loads in that order.

On Wednesday, I found that because the damage to the garage roof had been caused by the bad weather, our insurance should cover the necessary repairs, and the excess is low. I'm lucky to have good insurance in place and a friendly, helpful insurance broker.

On Thursday, I had the loveliest supportive email from The Good Friend Down Under, and The Mother listened patiently while I poured out my woes and then did practical helpful things like find some contact numbers of plumbers and builders and asbestos disposal experts. I'm lucky to have my friends and family around me.

On Friday (today), I had a lovely, lovely day with The Fabulous One, who let me cry on her shoulder, made me a cup of tea, and helped me to find more useful contact numbers - and was very patient while I made various phone calls - and then helped me to properly calm down and relax by chatting and crafting and eating bacon butties with me. I'm lucky to have Clair.

So it hasn't all been bad. And I can say in hope, not in fear: Who knows what tomorrow will bring?

Oh my goodness, what a week. You poor thing. Why does it seem that all the bad stuff happens at once? Hopefully it is time for your luck to change. Sounds like you have everything almost under control now. Sending big bloggy hugs x x

Oh Mel, that puts my pesky week with a cold in perspective!
Poor old you! It sounds like a rather horrible week - and you have done your best to rise above it and come out smiling.
So glad for you, that you have a supportive The Mother, The Friend Down Under and The Fabulous One!
I hope your plumbers and roof menders turn up pronto and get you back to normal. Also that the insurance people pay up quickly and with no trouble.
I think you've had your share of disasters for a few months... Wishing you a few weeks of sunshine and fun to follow!
