Signs of Spring!

It's been so great to enjoy some blue skies lately, and to see the flowers start to appear :-) I've taken a few photos of these signs of Spring for my Project 365, and when Shimelle posted a Friday challenge for the Something From Almost Nothing class I decided to pull those photos together. I'd never normally scrap this kind of theme, so that was a challenge in itself! In addition, we had to use metal, patterned paper, cardstock and ribbons on the page.

Now usually when I set out to make a layout I have an idea in mind of where I'm going with it. Often the layout takes on a life of its own and evolves beyond all recognition, but at least I have a starting point! This time that just didn't happen. I worked my way towards the final layout through stages of 'What if...?', making sure to incorporate all the elements of the challenge. And I'm not sure how happy I am with the result to be honest; I certainly don't hate it, and certain bits of it worked out well, but I'm just not quite sure overall.... It might be a moment to quote Kate! ;-)

I had the idea to print the photo of blue skies onto textured cardstock - it looks like a canvas print, I love the finish! The flower pics I printed at 3x4", added a giant paperclip to each, and tied a scrap of coordinating organza ribbon to each. I wanted something to link the predominant green of those pics with the blue of the sky, so I found some green patterned paper and formed ruffles from strips of it, stapling them along the bottom of the page. I then had the idea to use more ruffles as a background to my title, which I die-cut from more textured cardstock. I added more scraps of ribbon to try to link that with the photos and make use of all the colours. I then stapled them over the paper ruffles, which helped secure them to the page. Well, it did with the top ruffle. I then realised my stapler didn't have enough 'reach' to do the lower strip. *doh!* So I carefully peeled the ruffle away from the double-sided tape, stapled the letters to it, and stuck it back down. (That's why that part doesn't sit as neatly on the background!) Finally I added flower eyelets to dot the 'i's, again trying to link some of the different colours that were going on....

I think it's those colours that are bothering me, you know. There seemed to be so many different colours going on, and I'm not sure if they quite go, despite my best efforts to coordinate the various embellishments! But hey, it's fine. I like the layout even if I don't love it. I'm pleased to have met Shimelle's challenge. And I'm loving getting so much crafting done :-)

Well done on getting finished! It does look fresh and green and that's what we're all looking for at the moment, so it's a job well done I reckon!

Well done on doing the challenge and getting everything on to the layout. Any signs of Spring has to be a good thing, including your layout :o). Enjoy your weekend (we're back to grey and wet again, would love to see more blue sky soon!)

I like it, too! Such fun! I think the colors work.
If you really want some alternate design ideas, things I might have tried (not sure if they would have worked, and I do really like it the way it is) are:
putting the sky picture up top, since the sky is usually at the top;
A pop of yellow in the lower right hand corner to form a visual triangle of the yellow bits;
Shortening the green border along the bottom.
But I love, love, love the staples and the paper clips and especially the ribbons on the paper clips.

I really like that layout, love the colour. Very jealous of spring though, I nearly need to break out my slippers for our mornings now. It's getting cold brrrr.

Gorgeous Spring layout!! We are having wonderful weather here but unfortunately because the weather still dips below freezing every night, the grass is still brown and won't green up for a while yet. I see buds around and a little 'life' happening but everything will be 'brown' for a while longer :(

I do miss the gorgeous flowers and colours of Spring like in your layout!

I love the colors... I think they're all spring-y and therefore definitely coordinate. If they're in nature... they go well together. :) I especially love how you paperclipped each photo and tied on a coordinating ribbon. Very cool!

Love seeing those signs of spring. Here in California, we've enjoyed days of sunshine and lots of green. When we fly home tomorrow, I'm quite sure we'll not find much in the way of spring. It was only 29 degrees one day while we were away! I have loved every minute of this extra spring!

I really like the way you used the ribbon in the layout.
