Bag lady

Mise shared something interesting yesterday: the contents of her handbag. My first reaction was 'No way is anyone seeing what's in my handbag!!'; my second was 'Oh, what the heck, no secrets between me and my blog readers....'

So, here's my bag:

It's a rather nice, roomy, colourful tote that I picked up cheaply in a Brantano sale.

And inside...

Another handbag, couple of bookmarks The Girl picked up from the library, umbrella, Odeon membership card, pen, bee-yoo-ti-ful embroidered bag from The Creative Beast, couple of random elastic bands, tiny highlighter pen, emery board, receipt from Asda, bunch of keys, Soothers (cherry flavour), and camera case (which usually contains camera, of course, but not while camera is actually being used to take photograph...)

Next, let's take a closer look at that handbag within a handbag. Here are its contents:

Another (different) bunch of keys, another couple of emery boards, my Epipens (in case of potentially fatal anaphylactic shock, so kind of important!!), lip balm, Moleskine diary/notebook, hair bobble, voucher that expired end of January, voucher that expired today, teeny tiny screwdriver and screws in case I need to fix my glasses, anti-histamine tablets, whiteboard markers (4 different colours), chequebook, whistle, memory stick, receipt from The Children's swimming lessons, earphones for my mobile, wallet, cute little notebook, charm that came off my old mobile, Club Penguin card (confiscated from a child in class last week), 3 pens (2 of them Dr Who themed), tissues, that anti-bacterial gel stuff that you can use to wash your hands without water.

And then we unpeel another layer, to reveal the contents of my wallet:

Donor card, bank card, bank card for other account, Asda Christmas savings card (balance: £0), credit card, driving licence, AA membership card, my library card, The Boy's library card, The Girl's library card, The Boy's leisure centre card (for swimming lessons), The Girl's leisure centre card (for swimming lessons), my membership card for my German lessons, Tesco Clubcard, Somerfield card, Co-op card, Boots Advantage card, Costco membership card, Matalan card, Ikea Family membership card, loyalty card from my hairdresser (does that mean she's loyal to me?), photograph of The Children, little card with dates on the back that happened months ago but I liked the pattern on the front, business cards (which make me feel well-organised and a bit posh when I say to someone 'Here's my card...', but the effect is spoilt when I then have to write on my mobile number and email address 'cos we didn't print those onto the cards). And £30.02.

I really wish I'd thought to edit the contents of my bag before taking the photos. Or maybe nicked the photo of Mise's bag.... Anyone else carry round as much junk as I do?!

It did get me thinking, what are my essential items? If I'm only nipping out to drop off or collect The Children I might just grab keys, mobile (which usually lives in my pocket rather than my bag anyway) and camera, but I can make a case for most of the items above! I'll maybe make exceptions of the elastic bands, bookmarks, expired vouchers and mobile charm.... What are your essentials?

Oer, you are brave! I don't think I can find the bottom of my handbag! But I'm nosey too, so I loved this peek into yours. Isn't it ridiculous that we now count a phone as an essential? At least I do :)

I also had this in mind to do! I have to say, I'm surprised that you don't have a bad back, what with carrying all that stuff around!

Saw the first photo and thought....don't believe that's all she's got in her bag....but as you carried on 'unpeeling' it bagan to look more and more like mine....all entirely essential,of course.
Love that Brantano bag.

You can tell me to sod off but I'm going to ask anyway..what are you allergic to to need an epi-pen? Scary. My auntie is super allergic to stings from bees etc. I'm fascinated by allergies. I have many, but none that will kill me!

This is a fun post, you'll look back in 20 years and think "pah! Odeon..remember the days of cinemas.." :)

Mel - great post. I actually have a small Coach wristlet that I often keep in my bag, which I can pull out at a moment's notice when i need to travel light. It includes: driver's license, medical insurance card, credit card, cash, and the ever important Cherry Softlips chapstick. If you got into my actual bag, my pile would be significantly larger than yours - so where's the emergency feminine products?

I've swapped around my purses so often lately there isn't much in the one I am currently using. The only essential thing I have to have is my bank card, though the police feel I ought to have my driver's license as well. I'll generally grab my cell phone too but since the battery is dead most of the time I'm not sure why I take it.

Loving this! My bag has just as much in it, But most of it is crap! Old receipts and chocolate wrappers from when I am the go! It's quite bad really!

I like this...I think i might pick it up & run with it...do I have to include the fluff'n'stuff that invariably finds it's way into my bag? Apart from that I think my contents will be remarkably similar to yours!!

Love your bag - looks so soft and pretty. . . I'm hoping to get a new, pretty handbag.

the pile of store cards is such a great snapshot of life now. So many of them did not exist 25 years ago. Love that you have 4 colours of pen markers in your bag - pens for all occassions is a staple in my bag

What a fun post, Mel. Gosh - I'd be really embarrassed to show the inside of my bag! I suppose it would be a good opportunity to tidy things up a bit though!

I downsized my bag at the end of last year - essentials only now, bag is far too small to cope with anything else!

TWO bags within a bag: I think you get a lot of extra points for that. A very impressive quantity of stuff. Will £30.02 be enough?

Cheryl said...

Wow Mel you are as bad as me I think, we will have to compare xx

Hmmm. I scaled back a few years ago and started carrying a smaller purse and lots less stuff . . . But truth is I'm now back right where I was before. Only have a very small bag within a bag, but there's a lot of pockets and they are all full!

I have a lot of stuff in may bag, so much that hubby usually ends up carrying it lol good thing he doesn't care what people say when they see him with it :)

Interesting! I am not a real keeper of things in handbags generally. I have a bag for work with my work mobile/diary/ info etc etc in ready to go. Otherwise I just grab whatever I need for wherever I'm going and put it inot whichever bag takes my fancy! i actually didn't think that there was tooooo much in yours (but then you haven't seen my mum's handbags yikes!)

I was thinking you didn't have ENOUGH junk! Is that a bad thing? lol
